Hamnøy or Hamnøya is the oldest fishing village in Norway's Lofoten Islands. The Islands are interconnected by a single roadway. The colorful fishermen's cabins of Hamnøy, known as the Rorbu, are perched on stilts directly adjacent to the expansive Norwegian Sea. Looming behind the village is the steep rock face of Festhelltinden Mountain.
This photo was taken during the time of the midnight sun, which occurs during the summer months north of the Arctic Circle. In summer in this part of Norway, the sun never drops below the horizon.
As the sun hovered along the horizon line around 1:00 a.m., the colors in the sky began shifting to more golden tones. Warm light cast softly across the village and reflected off the dark sea. A long exposure helps to smooth the turbulent water and draws the eye to the colorful village.
